No man in this world who do not have the
habit. In fact, no living thing and flourish without the least resemblance to
the habit. Habit is a reminder that we learn in our environment and our
environment directly affects the way we act, speak and think. But what and how
their habits are formed?
Learning habits
Habit, by definition, is an action that
gained through experience and carried out regularly, often without thinking.
Having acquired the habit, it becomes almost automatic in nature. It is often
exhibited as a mannerism, word games, an unusual action, routines or desires,
such as smoking.
Psychologist Mortimer Adler, Ph.D.,
referring to the habit as the ability to set up ', study for a sustained period
of time. He even considers habit as a form of perfection, regardless of whether
they are good or bad. The reason is that the human infant, during the early
stages of his life, has a range of potential in its own right and ability, all
of which need to be developed. As 'raw material', human infants learn to do,
say and think of things as a result of the experience of growth or both. Thus,
he began to adapt a particular habit that he later would show when she gets
older.
Habits are not the same as the skills,
especially as a habit can be broken and forgotten, but the skills can not be.
Learn to speak a certain language, for example, is a skill. No matter how hard
you try, it is almost impossible to get rid of these skills and become people
who do not know the language.
You may be able to forget certain words
and phrases, especially if you become isolated from the language and live in
environments that use a different one. However, only by returning to the origin
or the language of your face again regardless of the media, you'll remember
what your first language, and very quickly, get it back.
Another example that distinguishes the
habit of a skill can be illustrated with cycling skills. Learn to balance and
manipulate the handle bar is a skill one learns. So he mounted a bicycle and as
part of his habit, he whistles as he does. After he gets off the bike, he no
longer needs to exert effort in maintaining the same balance needed to ride a
bike and he no longer had to pedal.
However, if he has a habit of whistling
while he was in the middle of doing something, like riding a bike, the same
habits may still appear even if he no longer ride. She can cook, gardening,
bathing or washing the car and he's still going to whistle. Because the whistle
is second nature to him, he made automatically, without any conscious effort on
his part.
Habits of the subjects is quite
interesting and in fact, a favorite among psychologists because of their nature
makes them an important element to learning. When pushed to the extreme, can
become annoying habits and developing a mental illness that often requires
treatment.
How habits are formed
As mentioned before, the habit began as
part of the experience of the past. They can also be formed as part of our
skills acquired. The average person, for example, have learned how to walk,
stand and sit. His habits may manifest itself through simple skills acquired,
as it always starts on the same foot when walking or using a certain attitude
when standing or prefer to cross one leg over the other when sitting.
Experience also plays a major role in the
formation of habits. For example, if someone has a broken tooth and was
embarrassed about them in the past, he might cover his mouth when speaking or
laughing. He continued to repeat this action again and again, until it becomes
a habit. Even when he had a permanent tooth, he still may find themselves shut
your mouth when you laugh from time to time.
Emotional aspects of the habits
While the above example is based
primarily on physical sources of habit, it is also important to remember that
habits can also be formed as a result of ongoing emotional response to an event
or other emotion. Habit of delaying, for example, are quite common and often
the result of emotional immaturity or lack of confidence.
Habits can also be formed as an attempt
at self-protection and preservation, are practical reasons why a particular
practice is reinforced. Automatically check the doors at night or check the car
before driving habits is a common manifestation of a form that is made to
ensure the safety and welfare.
