You may have heard someone tell you to
stop keeping up with the Joneses. Or you may have heard for the first time, it
is important to know that this is not a positive comment at all.
Keeping up with the Joneses is a popular
expression referring to those who try to look good or want to be as good as
other people to try to get the same thing as their neighbors.
Simply put, keeping up with the Joneses
is a sign of jealousy, which can damage your personality or even your life
socially and economically if not addressed.
Here are some ways to stop keeping up
with the Joneses:
A. Satisfied
Be content with what you have. If you
find happiness and contentment with whatever you have, then you really do not
need to keep up with the Joneses. Of course, some people just born lucky, but
does not always mean that you will never have your day.
Be thankful with what you have now and if
you're aiming for, at least, a little more progress in life, then saving for
your future and work harder. Envy will only take you anywhere. Try to live
within your limits.
2. Save more
At some point, you may have money to
spare and you can even have the capacity to buy what your neighbor can afford.
However, it is incorrect to assume that just because you can afford to buy
goods, you can splurge and try to compete with the neighbors or your friends.
Some people tend to keep up with the
Joneses as a way to maintain a good status symbol, trying to come across as
someone who is capable of many things. But try to realize that this is not a
healthy habit. You have to save something for your future. No one knows what
will happen tomorrow.
3. Do not use your credit card
With plastic money, splurging on things
would be too easy for you. And trying to keep up with the Joneses can be a bad
habit for you. It is better to live within your limits and eliminate anything
that will motivate you to buy unnecessary items.
Sure some people may be like the Joneses,
they are able to buy everything and worry-free living. But everyone has their
own individuality and your future will always be uncertain. Just try to
remember it.
